THE STORY...
Originally published by Zondervan in 1976 followed by multiple printings and editions, Hope's book, Discovering How to Pray, became a best seller in the Christian marketplace. Considered a classic among books on prayer, she is the one who coined the term, "Arrow Prayers," now in common use. She offered practical tips on personal and effective means of prayer to enrich a person's relationship with God, with results!
“This little book has had an outsize influence on Christians around the world—and on me and my prayer life. I’ve found that lots of books will teach you tons of things about prayer, but they don’t teach you how to do it. One of the best things about Hope’s book is this: it will help you to pray.”
~Rev. James Earl Mead, D.Min, DHL,
Author, Jesus And
Discovering How to Pray covers such topics as the use of "Arrow Prayers," creating a quiet place to pray, how Christian meditation differs from New Age practices, the skill of inner-listening, and picturing prayer as already answered, among other practical lessons. Her book has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and has been translated into eight other languages (many with multiple printings) including Korean, Afrikaans, Arabic, German, Kannada (in India), Spanish, Maylay, and Lithuanian.
Hope went on to write four more books, which are also now out of print. After re-obtaining the rights to publish her books from the original publisher, she asked her adult children if they would find a way to make sure they were available again in fresh paperback and digital formats for a new generation of readers. They began this project with re-publishing her book on prayer with independent publisher, Normandy Park Press (owned by her daughter in law, Linda MacDonald). Her grandson, Skyler Gronholz, came up with the cover concept and design, and her step-grandson, Bryan Hall polished the cover up for publication.

“In 1977, my first summer on Young Life Staff, I found myself in a new town, a new job, and no friends. My first week at a local board meeting, I met some new friends who gave me the book, Discovering How to Pray, as a welcome gift. I didn’t know I needed such a book, as I was headed for Fuller Seminary that fall and was now “officially” in full time ministry. Yet I soon discovered that, as I began my ministry journey, there was (and is) much that I have to learn about prayer. In this practical book, Hope helped me to “throw the whole weight of my anxieties upon him” (1 Peter 5:7, JB Phillips). That summer, prayer shifted from a religious obligation to a welcome and longed for refuge. “Arrow prayers” became regular practices that to this day I still share with others. I am grateful that Hope’s family is reissuing Discovering How to Pray. May new generations be as captivated by the unchanging gift of prayer through it as I was nearly a half a century ago.”

“What a delight to re-read this timeless treasure trove of truth! I first read Discovering How to Pray when I was a young believer in Jesus and a young mother. I needed Hope’s wisdom and gentle guidance at that time to teach me how to pray. And, now again, all these years later, her book has once again touched my heart and given me fresh insights about the priority of prayer and the simple steps to make this profound spiritual practice doable and life-giving. I'm so grateful it's available again so I can share it with others. And Hope’s life and character is living proof that what she writes about works! She's one of the most pure-hearted, peaceful, joyous, and loving persons I’ve ever been blessed to know!”

“When I read Discovering How to Pray many years ago, it changed the focus of my life and ministry. Hope's inspiring book shaped my approach to talking with the Lord. And, as a pastor, it motivated me to emphasize the importance of a vibrant prayer life for the folks I minister to. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It will revolutionize how you relate to God, and you will see answers to prayer in whole new ways.”
